Have power over anger - don’t let it have power over you

Getting angry is absolutely normal and healthy. Any Brisbane resident would be able to recall a time they felt angry and acted out in the heat of the moment. However, anger can become a problem when we find ourselves acting inappropriately in anger all too often.

When someone is overwhelmed by their anger, it takes courage and determination to ask for help and try to change.

What is anger?

Anger is a natural human response to emotional or physical attack. When released appropriately and safely, it can be defensive and healthy. This is known as primary anger.

However secondary anger involves an ongoing and inappropriate level of anger. A person experiencing secondary anger may feel out of control and act destructively.

What are the signs of problematic anger?

A normal experience of anger might be a sense of irritation in Brisbane traffic, or an angry complaint to your friend about an overbearing boss. In these cases you should be able to move past the anger after you have acknowledged it and released it appropriately.

However it is problematic if you are incapable of letting the emotion go. You may notice this as an internal inability, or you may emotionally or physically inflict pain on others around you through your expression of anger.

Anger management counselling can empower you to be in control

Brisbane Anger Management Counselling from a Life Supports counsellor or psychologist will empower you to learn strategies to control and express your anger. You can meet with your Brisbane and surrounds-based counsellor or psychologist to explore your individual reasons for feeling such anger, and identify which situations may trigger your out-of-control response.

Anger Management FAQs

Your initial session with your Life Supports counsellor or psychologist is often used to establish a clear understanding of your personal situation, and formulate an individualised treatment plan.

Together, you and your counsellor will:

  • Identify your habitual anger ‘triggers’ – these may involve certain people, situations, or feelings
  • Determine how your thought patterns affect your behaviour, and show you how adopting new patterns can work to your advantage
  • Identify new ways to manage stressors in your life, including lifestyle adjustments
  • Work towards improving your relationship with yourself and others

Life Supports anger management counsellors and psychologists use evidence-based interventions such as solutions-focused therapy and stress reduction techniques to help our clients address anger management concerns. By far, the most effective evidence-based treatment for anger management is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Research shows that CBT is an incredibly useful anger management tool. In a recent analysis of multiple CBT trials, 76% of clients reported a medium to long-term improvement in anger management capabilities compared to control groups.

These results show there is real hope for those struggling with anger management. Life Supports anger management counselling can help you reduce your anger levels, and regain control of your emotions and behaviour. Back to top
